Quick answer

What does door repair & installation cover?

We repair and replace doors across the Township of Ocean. Most sticking and latching problems are a dropped hinge or a strike plate slightly out of position, not a door that needs replacing, so adjustment is where we start.

— Overview

How this job usually goes

A door reports on the house around it. Sticking that comes and goes with the season is humidity. Sticking that only got worse is the frame moving. The two need opposite responses, and taking material off the door is the one that cannot be undone.

What we check first

  • Sticking that comes and goes with the season is humidity — planing is reversible damage and usually the wrong fix.
  • A latch that no longer meets the strike is normally a dropped hinge or a shifted frame, not a bad door.
  • We check the frame for square before assuming the door is at fault.

What this service includes

  • Sticking and dragging adjustment
  • Hinge replacement and repositioning
  • Strike plate and latch alignment
  • Interior door replacement
  • Exterior and storm door fitting
  • Frame and jamb repair
  • Weatherstripping and threshold renewal
  • Bifold and closet door repair

Signs this is the job you need

  • 01A door that binds in humid months only
  • 02A latch that no longer meets the strike
  • 03Daylight visible around a closed exterior door
  • 04A door that swings shut on its own
  • 05A draught you can feel along the frame

Locally

Why this comes up here

Humidity-related sticking is common near Deal Lake and across coastal Monmouth County — doors swell in summer and gap in winter. Adjusting hinges and strike plates holds year-round; planing a door at its fattest leaves a gap all winter.

My door sticks in summer only. Should it be planed?

Almost certainly not. Plane it at its fattest and you will have a gap all winter. The hinges or strike plate want adjusting instead — reversible, and it holds year round.

Can you fix a door that will not latch?

Yes, and it is normally quick. Either the strike plate needs moving, the hinges have dropped, or the frame has shifted. Which one determines the fix.

5 out of 5 on our Google Business Profile

  • The first job Multi-Skilled Handyman did for me was to replace our tiny mail box with a bulky secure mailbox in our already built brick post. The outcome was fabulous. It looks like the wall and mailbox were built at the same time. Since then, Multi-Skilled Handyman has come over every six weeks. Each time, I simply hand over our Honey Do list and know with great confidence that everything will be done to amazing perfection.

  • Multi-Skilled Handyman is totally awesome and definitely an honest handyman! He came recommended to us and we called to have him look at the pergola over our patio to maybe replace some of the wood. He said that it wouldn’t be worth it for us to do now, that we should just wait and replace the whole thing. We were impressed with his honesty.

  • Great communication from Multi-Skilled Handyman! Very easy to work with and coordinate scheduling. Multi-Skilled worked really hard, cleaned up each day before he left, and did quality work. We had carpeting removed on the third floor, sub floor repaired, and a new laminate floor installed.

  • Multi-Skilled Handyman installed two porch railings for me. Very amiable and responsive reception by Multi-Skilled. Mike could not have been more responsible and knowledgeable in installing the railings. Will ask them again to help out when I need trustworthy individuals in my home. Thank you!
