Can a fan hang from an existing light box?

It should not. Standard fixture boxes are rated for a static light, not a fan's weight plus constant motion. A fan-rated box or brace is the correct fitting and it is the difference between a fan that lasts and one that works loose.

Why does my ceiling fan wobble?

Either the blade set is out of balance, the mounting has loosened, or the box was never rated for a fan. The third is the one worth fixing properly — a wobble loads the mounting every minute the fan runs.
